The Five-Point Exploding Heart Technique

Point 1
They meet in a library; she is reading Wilde, he is researching quantum physics and several other topics that she doesn’t understand. There are no explosions, no sudden eruptions of emotion, no inexplicable passion that seizes one totally out of the blue; contrary to the popular belief, love usually does not leap – it comes on tip-toe, slowly and stealthily, edging closer and closer before it finally engulfs one in its warm and often painful embrace.

Apfelrotkohl
(Red Cabbage with Apples)

1 medium head red cabbage, cored and sliced
2 large tart apples, peeled and sliced
1 medium sweet onion, sliced and separated into rings
1 1/2 cups water
1 cup cider vinegar
1/2 cup sugar
1 tablespoon butter
1 teaspoon salt
6 whole peppercorns
2 whole allspice
2 whole cloves
1 bay leaf
2 teaspoons cornstarch
2 teaspoons cold water

In a Dutch oven, toss cabbage, apples and onion rings. Add water, vinegar, sugar, butter and salt. Place peppercorns, allspice, cloves and bay leaf on a double thickness of cheesecloth; bring up corners and tie with kitchen string to form a bag. Add to Dutch oven. Bring to a boil. Reduce heat; cover and simmer for 1-1/4 hours. Discard spice bag. In a small bowl, combine cornstarch and cold water, stir until smooth and stir into cabbage mix. Bring to a boil; cook and stir for 1-2 minutes or until thickened.

It's usually served as a side with beef, goose or duck. Enjoy. :)

I'm sorry for posting two questions in two days :/ ...I hope you don't mind too much

I am doing a book report and in the book the author describes a character very thoroughly so I want to say:
"She mentions everything from the color of her hair to the name of her first boyfriend"

I would also like to say:
"I get the impression that Pauline is... but she sees herself as..."

I tried to look them up in both dictionaries and online but didn't find any good translations so any help from you guys would be hugely appreciated :)

If I want to say, "I support you," do I say, "Je suis favorable à toi?" Or would it be "à tu?"

Or is there a better way to say "I support you" in general?

Thanks in advance for the help.

9th-Nov-2009 08:34 pm - Book Report

Hello :)

Firstly I would like to point out that I am NOT studying French at school and I am NOT going to hand in the book report I am working on. 0% cheating, in other words :P

Now, to the point; I am working on a book report and I could use some help translating these sentences because I want to get them right since they're so useful:

The book is about...

At the beginning of the book...

At the end of the book...

Towards the end of the book...

The author describes the ... in great detail

The main character is described as...

The theme of the book is...

I especially liked the part where... because...

What I think the author is trying to say is that...

Thanks so much in advance :)

Berlin Marks 20th Anniversary of Wall's Fall

World leaders, dignitaries and thousands of visitors are in Berlin today to mark the 20th anniversary of the fall of the Berlin Wall. It is a time to remember the past and celebrate the November day in 1989 that changed the future. Despite the rain, crowds gathered at the Bornholm Bridge, the first checkpoint in the Berlin Wall to open the night of November 9, 1989.

The Wall stood for nearly three decades, dividing the city and Germany into East and West. But in the end, protests and peaceful revolutions, such as in Poland, and changes in Moscow brought it down. That led to the reunification of Germany and the end of the Cold War.

In a gesture full of symbolism, Chancellor Angela Merkel crossed from one side to other, accompanied by VIP guests, former Soviet President Mikhail Gorbachev, former Polish labor leader and president Lech Walesa, and civil rights activists of 20 years ago.

Mrs. Merkel said meeting here was especially significant. She said there is joy in the possibilities that opened up at this very bridge, noting it was the result of a long struggle against oppression. She thanked Lech Walesa and his Solidarity Labor movement in Poland and Mikhail Gorbachev, the reformist leader in Moscow. Both paved the way for what would happen in Germany in 1989.

World leaders and dignitaries have gathered to join in the 20th anniversary celebrations, which include open air concerts, fireworks, and the symbolic collapse of a wall of brightly painted oversize dominoes. The dominoes have been set up to run for one and a half kilometers in an area where the Wall once stood, and late Monday they will be toppled - much like the Wall was two decades ago. Organizers of the anniversary events say they want the festivities to connect with ordinary people - to show that it was people power, with the help of reform-minded political leaders, that brought down the Wall and changed the course of history.
